Background | CD57 (also known as beta-1,3-glucuronyltransferase 1, Galactosylgalactosylxylosylprotein 3-beta-glucuronosyltransferase 1, Glucuronosyltransferase P, Human Natural Killer 1, B3GAT1, NK1, HNK1, LEU7, NK-1, GLCUATP, and GLCATP) is a member of the glucuronyltransferase gene family. The enzymes produced by the members of this family recognize non-reducing terminal sugars and their anomeric linkages by exhibiting strong acceptor specificity. CD57 is also involved in the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycan and L2/HNK-1 carbohydrate epitopes on glycoproteins. CD57 is expressed mainly in the brain and several alternate transcriptional splice variants have been characterized. In cancer research, CD57 positive lymphocytes have been used successfully in monitoring the progression of various cancers (PMID: 21491089). HNK1 is also involved in synaptic plasticity and neurodevelopment (PMID: 20950796). |
Synonyms | CD57; GLCATP; GLCUATP; HNK1; LEU7; NK-1; NK1 |
Note | Prior to immunostaining paraffin tissues, antigen retrieval with sodium citrate buffer (pH 6.0) is recommended. |
