Background	Insulin is a 51 amino acids peptide hormone MW 5808 Da. It is produced by beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Insulin enhances membrane transport of glucose, amino acids and certain ions. It promotes glycogen storage, formation of triglycerides and synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. Lack of insulin causes diabetes mellitus. Insulin is also present in tumors of B cell origin such as insulinoma.
