Background	CD24 is a two-chain glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)- anchored glycoprotein expressed at multiple stages of B-cell development, whereas expression in plasma cell is very low or negative. In addition, it is expressed in a wide variety of human malignancies including B cell lymphoma, renal cell carcinoma, small cell and nonsmall cell lung carcinoma, glioma, epithelial ovarian cancer, and breast cancer. CD24 may play a role in regulation of B-cell proliferation and maturation, and has been described in the developing pancreas and brain, and in regenerating muscle, keratinocytes, and renal tubules. CD24 expression has been associated with an adverse prognosis in breast cancer (5), ovarian cancer, and prostate cancer.
