Background | AKT2, also known as RAC-beta serine/threonine-protein kinase, is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the AKT2 gene. It influences metabolite storage as part of the insulin signal transduction pathway. AKT2 is one of 3 closely related serine/threonine-protein kinases (AKT1, AKT2 and AKT3) that belong to the AKT subfamily. AKT represents an important signaling hub, modulating many processes including metabolism, proliferation, cell survival, growth and angiogenesis by phosphorylating a range of downstream substrates in response to growth factor stimulation. Akt2 is associated with the development of human cancers. Amplification or high levels of expression of Akt2 are frequently found in human pancreatic, lung, colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers, and high Akt2 expression levels are positively correlated with the aggressiveness of cancer or poor survival rates in colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers. AKT2 constitutes a prognostic marker of poor clinical outcomes in breast cancer, ovarian cancer, lung adenocarcinoma, and hepatocellular carcinoma. |
