Background | Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide hormone secreted by parafollicular cells (also known as C cells) of the thyroid (or endostyle) in humans. It acts to reduce blood calcium (Ca2+), and is functionally an antagonist with parathyroid hormone (PTH) and Vitamin D3. Calcitonin is formed by the proteolytic cleavage of a larger prepropeptide procalcitonin, which is the product of the CALC1 gene (CALCA). Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC), typically produces an elevated serum calcitonin level. Prognosis of MTC depends on early detection and treatment. Calcitonin assay is used in identifying patients with nodular thyroid diseases, which is helpful in making an early diagnosis of medullary carcinoma of thyroid. |
