Gene Name tyrosinase related protein 1
Background Tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TRP-1) is involved in melanin synthesis. TRP1 is present on the melanosomal membranes of melanoma, normal melanocytes and nevi. Recent evidence suggests that TRP-1 is involved in maintaining stability of tyrosinase protein and modulating its catalytic activity. TRP-1 is also involved in maintenance of melanosome ultrastructure and affects melanocyte proliferation and cell death.
Defects in TRP-1 affect pigmentation in melanosomes, and have been shown to cause two diseases dependent on skin colour; rufous oculocutaneous albinism (ROCA) occurs predominantly in southern African blacks and oculocutaneous albinism type III (OCA-III/3) a form of albinism with only moderate reduction of pigment.
Synonyms Tyrosinase-related protein 1, TYRP, TYRRP, TRP-1, TRP1, DHICA oxidase, Catalase B, CAS2
